The fairytale Bory Castle in Hungary
Bory Castle in Székesfehérvár is one of the most unique and beautiful attractions in Hungary. Walking between the towers, wandering between the columns in the garden, or walking down the spiral staircase, women can feel like a real princess - men will not be bored either while admiring this architectural masterpiece.
To my greatest surprise, the castle was built between 1923-1964 - I thought that its history goes back much longer.
Jenő Bory, an architect, sculptor and painter from Székesfehérvár, built the castle single-handedly for decades (thus entering the Guinness Book of Records), thus commemorating his art and conjugal love - that is why the castle is decorated with the works of art of the painter's wife - his own and the works of contemporary artists in addition.
Entering the gate, we enter a wonderful garden with beautiful flowers and trees with lush foliage. Walking up the stairs, you can see one of my favorites, the elephant courtyard, which got its name from the elephant statue which is simbolically holding the entire castle on its back.
It is also worth climbing the towers, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city, and you can get a better view of the castle from above. It is simply amazing that someone could build such a thing by himself - even if it took 40 years.
In the courtyard with a hundred columns, under the arcades, statues of famous historical figures are lined up, walking around you can recognize 1-2 works, because the original version of most of them can still be found in various places in Hungary.
It is worth sitting on a bench in the castle garden and admiring the elaborateness of the garden, the detail of the sculptures, and the high castle towers - and imagine that all this was built by one person - nothing is impossible, right?!
From here we get to the chapel of Spouse's love, in which we can see a seated statue modeled after the artist's wife. The fresco above the statue is the funniest work in the castle for me, because it shows the muses of other artists, and the ladies are yellow because they are jealous - after all, Jenő Bory didn't love them like he loved his wife.
Perhaps now you, dear readers, will better understand why Bory Castle is called the Hungarian Taj Mahal.
Last but not least, there was one more amazing spot in the castle, the spiral staircase in the Flag Tower. Isn't it amazing?
An amazing work of art, both in its colors and in its design, it is very special, its lace-like pierced railing offers a sumptuous sight. The design, shapes and colors of this staircase remind me of the work of one of my favorite architects, Gaudí.
The towers themselves create an atmosphere as if we were walking in a fairytale castle.
Unfortunately, we got there late and only had an hour left to see the castle, but it's worth spending there 2-3 hours at least.
The castle is open to visitors every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., adult admission is approx. 4.5 euros.
I was completely captivated by the atmosphere of the castle, I can say without exaggeration that it is one of the most wonderful buildings in the country. Certainly it worth to check it out!
