Bali Day Trip: Deer Island - Exploring the Enchanting Menjangan Island
Seeing dolphins, snorkeling at two amazing coral reefs among colourful fishes and feeding deers on beautiful island- it’s all possible in one day at Menjangan Island.
If you are planning a trip to Bali and seeking a unique experience that combines a taste of adventure with stunning natural beauty, then Menjangan Island should be on the top of your list. Nestled off the northwest coast of Bali, Menjangan Island offers an unforgettable day trip that encompasses fascinating history, remarkable marine life, and encounters with exotic animal species.
Menjangan Island holds a significant place in Bali's history. The name "Menjangan" translates to "Deer Island" in English, hinting at the presence of deer on the island. According to folklore, the local Balinese people believed that the island's deer were sacred and embodied the spirits of their ancestors. Thus, the island acquired its name as a testament to its unique wildlife.
Located within West Bali National Park, Menjangan Island can be reached via a short boat ride. We stayed at an amazing glamping resort there, and they arranged a boat for us, it picked us up right at the beach of the hotel in the morning. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, this tropical paradise awaits those seeking a break from the bustling tourist attractions of Bali.
Embarking on a day trip to Menjangan Island is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. Upon leaving the harbour, you may have the incredible opportunity to spot dolphins as they playfully swim alongside your boat.
These majestic creatures in their natural habitat mark the beginning of an adventure-filled day. It was a dream come true for me to see dolphins like this, and all of a sudden there they were!
Once you arrive at Menjangan Island, gear up and get ready to explore the remarkable underwater world that waits beneath the waves. Snorkeling equipment is provided upon request, although we have taken our own masks and fins.
Menjangan Island is renowned for its pristine coral reefs, which are teeming with a wide variety of marine life. Snorkeling at two different locations will expose you to a vast array of colorful fish, vibrant coral formations, and maybe even an enchanting sea turtle gliding gracefully through the waters- well, we were not lucky enough to see a sea turtle, but there’s a chance.
overall,we spent more then 2 hours in the water, it was an amazing experience, I saw many types of fishes what I haven't seen anywhere else before.
As you emerge from the sea, make sure to keep an eye out for the island's namesake, the graceful deer. These wild animals roam freely on the island, seemingly unperturbed by the presence of visitors. Or at least some of them, because as we swam closer to the shore they ran away. But those ones are really brave who live close to the where most of the boats stops for lunch. ( no restaurants here, we received pre packed lunchboxes)
You may even have the opportunity to feed these gentle creatures, so prepare with some snacks! Luckily I asked for a fruit plate for lunch, so I could share it with the deers.
They are super cute, so prepare for creating cherished moments amidst the tranquil paradise of Menjangan Island. And if you continue walking after feeding the deers, this view awaits you.
As the day draws to a close and you bid farewell to Menjangan Island, reflect on the memories and experiences you have collected over the course of the day. From the historical significance of the island's name to witnessing dolphins in their natural habitat, exploring vibrant coral reefs, and connecting with wildlife, this day trip offers a truly unforgettable experience.
Menjangan Island is a hidden gem in Bali, brimming with natural wonder and enchantment. If you're seeking a day filled with adventure, tranquility, and breathtaking scenery, this island should be high on your list of must-visit destinations.
